Research and Development > Testing > Kvalsund
ANDRITZ HYDRO Hammerfest selected Kvalsund in Northern Norway as test site for the Company’s prototype HS300. This site was selected due to its current velocity, water depth as well sheltered location. The close proximity to Hammerfest with all relevant infrastructures makes it an ideal location for a full scale laboratory.
HS300 has been used as a proof of concept turbine from 2003 – 2009. Tidal industry is under development and extensive research is done in a number of areas.
Example of research where the turbine is giving valuable contribution is the layout of park arrays. No redeveloper has yet to build a full-scale park with the associated challenges. The first array is being planed at Islay, HS300 full-scale measurements part of the program to optimize park layout. Turbine wake, propagation, turbulence and extent, is currently being investigated in detail benchmarked against theoretical simulations.
