Pioneering tidal power device to be tested in Scotland
Hammerfest Strøm UK Ltd., subsidiary of the Norwegian tidal power developer Hammerfest Strøm AS, has today (Tuesday 2nd February, 2010) received a £ 3.9 million grant from the Carbon Trust for the construction and testing of a 1 MW tidal power device at the European Marine Energy Centre (EMEC) in Orkney.
The co-operation between ScottishPower Renewables and Hammerfest Strøm, which was established in 2007, have led to a VIBES award. The companies established a Joint Venture through a subsidiary, Hammerfest Strøm UK Ltd. The subsidiary are now taking the tidal technology to commercialization.
Hammerfest Strøm is now strengthen the organization through changes in the management for better utilization of skills and increased prosperity in the company’s projects, and commenced work to further strengthen the financial and industrial foundation of the owners.
The tidal turbine goes back into water outside Hammerfest
The world’s first turbine converting the kinetic energy in tidal water and delivered the energy to the national grid was retrieved for verification in 2007. The turbine has been reinstalled for further research 31st July 2009.
